Compound bows fall into rough price tiers. Knowing what each tier includes, and what it leaves out, keeps you from comparing a $700 package with a $1,500 bare bow. This page lays out the tiers with 2026 prices and specs. For specific budget bows and test results, see budget hunting bows. For the rest of the setup at each budget, see the bowhunting setup guide by budget.
I shoot a Mathews Lift X 33. Everything below is researched from maker pages and outlets listed at the end.
The tiers at a glance
| Tier | Typical price | What's in the box | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ready-to-hunt (RTH) | Under about $800 | Bow plus accessories (contents vary by package) | Bear Alaskan Pro RTH, Bear Adapt 2 HP RTH+, Diamond Deploy SB |
| Lower flagship | About $1,300 | Bare bow | Elite Varos |
| Flagship | About $1,450 to $1,700 | Bare bow | Mathews ARC, Bowtech Alliance, Hoyt Alpha AX-3, Elite Carbon AXYS |
| Premium carbon | About $2,000 and up | Bare bow | Hoyt Carbon RX-10, PSE Sicario |
ArcherSource's 2026 buyer's guide draws the same lines: below about $1,200 you're mostly buying ready-to-hunt packages with accessories included, and above $2,000 you're paying for carbon and features like Hoyt's tuning system.

Specs for bows without a linked maker page come from Bowhunting.com's 2026 roundup. Where the two roundups list different prices, both are shown.
What each tier gets you
Ready-to-hunt. The bow comes with the accessories you need. The budget hunting bows comparison covers three of these with maker specs and what independent testers say you give up.
Flagship. A bare bow, so budget for a sight, rest, release, arrows, quiver and stabilizer on top. ArcherSource calls the $1,500 to $1,600 range the sweet spot for most archers. The setup guide prices those accessories.
Premium carbon. Carbon risers and brand-specific features. ArcherSource says above $2,000 you're paying for carbon material and, with Hoyt, its tuning system.
Brands at a glance
All of these are major bow makers with 2026 flagships in the tables above. Bear and Diamond appear here at the ready-to-hunt level. Check each maker's site for current models, since lineups change every year.
Fit matters more than tier
Each bow is only made in certain draw lengths and draw weights. The ARC 34, for example, covers 26.5 to 32 inches, while the ARC 30 covers 25 to 30.5. Check your draw length against the spec sheet before you fall for a bow. For draw weight, see draw weight for deer.

Questions hunters ask
Is a flagship worth it over an RTH bow? See budget hunting bows for what testers say you give up.
Why do roundups list different prices? The roundups don't explain the gaps. Use the maker's site for the current price.
Which brand is best? We don't pick one. The flagships here are close on paper, as the spec table shows.
