The hard part of a good hunt often starts after the shot. How you get a deer out depends on how far you're going, what's in the way, and how much you're willing to carry in on every sit just in case.
I use a Vecacosic deer drag strap and harness. Below is how it compares with the other common options: a handle style drag, a sled, and a wheeled cart.
The quick comparison

Harness: what I carry
A harness puts the pull on your shoulders and body instead of just your arms. The Vecacosic listing describes nylon webbing with metal carabiners, padded shoulder straps, an adjustable drag line, a grip handle, and a hook and loop wrap so it folds down small for the pack.
Why buy one: it weighs almost nothing in the pack and costs little. What you give up: the deer is still on the ground, so friction is the same as any drag.
Handle drags: the cheapest step up
Hawk says its Cinch lifts the deer's head, neck, and shoulders off the ground and reduces pull weight by up to 40 percent. That figure is Hawk's claim. It packs to 9.5 inches and the handle fits over a ball hitch for an ATV or vehicle.
Sleds: less friction, more bulk
A sled gets the whole deer off the dirt. KØLTR lists its GameSled at 84 by 32 inches open, rolling to 32 inches long, with 11 pounds for the sled alone and a recommended load of up to 300 pounds. KØLTR claims a 200 pound animal "feels like 100" on its sled; treat that as marketing.
Best fit: long drags over leaves, grass, or snow. Less good in thick brush, where a big sled snags.
Carts: for trails and long hauls
A cart takes the weight off you almost entirely on decent ground. Hawk lists the Crawler at 45 pounds with a 500 pound rating, four foam filled tires, and dual pivoting axles to roll over logs and stumps. It folds to 42 by 31 inches.
Best fit: trails, logging roads, and field edges. Not something you carry in on a saddle hunt. Some public land has rules on wheeled carts, so check your state and the property's regulations.
Which one should you get?
- Short drags, any terrain: a harness or handle drag in your pack.
- Long drags on open ground or snow: a sled.
- Long hauls on trails or roads: a cart, left at the truck until you need it.
The options aren't exclusive. A harness rides in the pack, and a sled or cart can wait at the truck for the long haul.
Other good options
Researched, not first-hand.
- Hunters Specialties Deluxe Deer Drag. A simple harness style drag from a long running hunting brand.
- Budget poly sleds. Several sellers list thin roll up sleds rated around 400 to 550 pounds for much less than the KØLTR. Check thickness and rating on the listing.
FAQ
Is a deer drag harness worth it? For the weight and price, it's one of the easiest things to keep in your pack.
Does a sled really make dragging easier? It reduces ground friction. How much depends on the ground. KØLTR's "half the weight" claim is the maker's own.
Can I take a cart on public land? Rules vary by state and property. Check before you go.
