A leafy suit is a light mesh jacket and pants covered in cut leaf shapes. You throw it over your clothes to break up your outline. This page covers what deer see, what camo can't do, and two budget suits side by side. Sources are at the end.

I'm cheap with my camo. I wear a Ginsco 3D leafy ghillie suit that comes with a face mask and gloves.

What deer see

  • Built for low light and spotting predators. A University of Georgia study of the deer eye found its visual system is specialized for low-light sensitivity and predator detection, with a wide horizontal "visual streak" of cones.
  • Most sensitive to blue and green. Deer have two-color vision with high sensitivity to short and middle wavelengths, per a Florida GPS collar study that reviewed deer vision research.

What camo can't do

In a Royal Society study using human viewers on a computer, an isolated moving target on a still background couldn't avoid detection, whatever its camouflage. Camo did make targets harder to identify when similar moving objects were around, like leaves blowing in the wind. The study used people, not deer, so take it as a general lesson: the suit helps when you're still or when the woods are moving, and it may not hide movement like drawing your bow.

Fit and durability

From Ginsco's Amazon reviews:

  • Fit is mixed. Some say it fits right. Others say the pants run short and the sizing runs small. One reviewer said the jacket and pants can't be sized separately.
  • Durability is mixed. Some found it tough enough. Others said it tears on thorns and brush.
  • Warm weather pick. Reviewers like it on hot days. One wouldn't recommend it alone for cold mornings.
  • Goes over clothes. Several reviewers wear it over jackets.

Titan says its leaves don't snag branches or pick up twigs the way traditional string ghillie suits do.

Other good options

  • Regular camo with less movement. Since motion gives you away, sitting still and drawing at the right time matters too. See saddle hunting shot angles.
  • Early season bugs. A leafy suit with a mask pairs well with permethrin for hunting clothes.
  • Check blaze orange rules if your bow season overlaps a gun season.

Questions hunters ask

Do leafy suits work for bowhunting? They break up your outline. Research suggests movement still gets you noticed, so the suit works best when you stay still.

Can I wear a leafy suit in cold weather? It's mesh, so wear it over your warm layers. See cold weather layering for long sits.

Are cheap leafy suits durable? Reviews of the Ginsco are split on durability.
