What the extra money buys

  • Insulation type. LaCrosse names Thinsulate Ultra. TIDEWE lists "800g insulation" without naming the type.
  • Height. The Alphaburly Pro is 18 inches. The TIDEWE shaft runs 15 to 16 inches, so creek crossings are a little shallower.
  • Scent claims. LaCrosse markets "scent-free rubber." Treat that as marketing. See scent control on a budget for what actually helps.

Sizing and fit

  • TIDEWE tells wide-footed buyers to order one size up. Amazon reviewers are split: some say true to size, some say they run big. Measure your foot against the listing's insole length chart.
  • LaCrosse describes an Active Fit with an adjustable gusset.
  • Leave room for the socks you'll actually wear. Some TIDEWE reviewers fit one thick wool sock but found two very snug.

Known complaints

From TIDEWE's Amazon reviews: a rubber smell out of the box that fades with airing, some say they're heavy, and one reviewer reported the toe wearing out after a season of daily use.

Other good options

  • Lighter, uninsulated boots for early season. TIDEWE sells a standard version with a listed comfort rating of -4°F to 59°F (listing).

Questions hunters ask

How much insulation do I need? Compare the makers' comfort ratings to the temperatures you hunt. The table lists them.

Are cheap rubber boots waterproof? TIDEWE lists its boots as 100 percent waterproof, and most reviewers mentioning water resistance were positive.

Do rubber boots help with scent? Makers market it. Our scent article covers what's backed up.
