A bleat call can work on does as well as bucks. Used at the right time, it can turn a doe your way or bring a cruising buck the last few yards. This page covers only bleats: the two types, when each works, and the cans that make them.
For grunting and rattling through the rut, see calling during the rut and when and how to call deer. For rattling tools, see rattling: antlers vs rattle bags. Everything below is researched, with sources at the end.
Two kinds of bleats
American Hunter's Frank Miniter describes two types:
- Fawn-in-distress bleat. He uses it in the pre-rut to fill a doe tag, with a single-reed mouth call. He says early season is a great time to bleat like a fawn, and it works best near doe bedding areas.
- Doe-in-estrus bleat. Later in the rut, he says, it can be a convincer for a cruising buck. He uses a Primos Great Big Can.
Calling does
MeatEater's Wired to Hunt says relaxed deer, like feeding deer, are more callable, and lone does seem more responsive. It suggests soft, back-and-forth fawn bleats and doe grunts, and says one plaintive fawn bleat is often enough to turn a lone doe. Its rule: if the deer get "boogery," stop calling.
Calling bucks with estrus bleats
- Cruising bucks. MeatEater's Mark Kenyon says his best success with a can has been on a lone buck that looks to be cruising for does.
- Bleats plus grunts. Kenyon pairs a couple of bleats with 4 to 5 short tending grunts in quick succession to sound like a buck following a hot doe.
- Call the doe, get the buck. Field & Stream quotes a hunter (Farris) who calls to a doe that has a buck following her, so she brings the buck in.
Through the season
From Field & Stream's season-by-season calling guide and the writers above:
| Phase | Bleat to use | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Early season | Soft fawn bleats near doe bedding | Miniter (American Hunter) |
| Pre-rut | Blind sequences with bleats and grunts | Kirby (Field & Stream) |
| Rut | Estrus bleats for cruising bucks | Miniter, Kenyon |
| Post-rut | More bleats, less intensity | Kirby (Field & Stream) |
In the pre-rut, Kirby follows a buck bark and light rattling with five or six doe bleats and six to eight tending grunts. In the post-rut, he says to focus on bleat sequences and back off intensity, with five or six turns of a can followed by one or two grunts, since does that weren't bred recycle about a month later.
Can calls compared
Prices checked October 10, 2026. Prices are approximate.
| Call | What the maker says | Approx. price |
|---|---|---|
| Primos The Original Can | The standard-size can in Primos's The Can family | See maker |
| Primos The Great Big Can | Larger and louder for long range, windy days and open fields; pre-rut through post-rut | $12.99 (Amazon); $14.99 (Primos) |
My own call is the Illusion Extinguisher, an adjustable grunt tube. For grunt tubes compared, see grunt calls, budget vs premium.
Other good options
- Your voice. MeatEater says a soft, nasal "meeeee" often works to call does and young bucks, and lets you change volume and inflection.
- A single-reed fawn bleat call, like the Knight & Hale model Miniter names, for early season doe calling.
Questions hunters ask
When should I use a doe bleat? Fawn bleats early near doe bedding, estrus bleats for cruising bucks in the rut, per Miniter.
Will bleating spook deer? Watch body language. MeatEater says stop if they get nervous and keep going if they don't.
How many times should I flip the can? Kenyon gives it "a couple turns." Kirby uses five or six in his sequences.
